The voices you’re hearing now belong to members of the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir. Their stated goal is “To inspire joy and unity among all people through Black gospel and spiritual music traditions.”

Join us this Saturday November 21st from 3 pm to 8 pm for KALW's Folk Festival of the Airwaves—it's five hours of continuous live music by some of the Bay Area's finest talent.

The T Sisters are a contemporary folk band from Oakland, California. Songwriters Erika, Rachel and Chloe Tietjen are joined on stage by upright bassist Steve Height and Andrew Allen Fahlander on mandolin and guitar. The vocally-driven five piece will perform at the Sixth Annual “Backyard Concert” taking place Saturday afternoon, July 25th, in Santa Rosa. Doors open at 4pm.


Tonight is opening night for the The Tenderloin Museum, and they’re celebrating with a panel discussion titled ‘The Screaming Queens, Then and Now,’ featuring transgender activists Tamara Ching, Veronika Fimbres, and filmmakers Susan Stryker & Victor Silverman.

The Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir's mission is to inspire joy and unity among all people through black gospel and spiritual music. Ahead of their 29th annual Holiday Concert at the Paramount Theater in Oakland, members of the choir join host Devon Strolovitch for a live in-studio performance on Fog City Blues this Wednesday, December 3 at 9 pm.

The Trinity Trio makes its debut on "Folk Music & Beyond" this Saturday (5/31) at 3 pm.  Diana Rowan on Celtic harp, Todd Denman on uilleann pipes, and Eamonn Flynn on organ.  Their music covers ancient Celtic chants, plaintive Eastern European songs and straight up gospel, with energetic detours via Irish jigs & reels.  Diana describes their sound as "massive, deep, and spiritual."

99% Invisible: “Structural Integrity”  When it was built in 1977, Citicorp Center was the seventh-tallest building in the world.  But it’s the base of the building that really makes the tower so unique. The bottom nine of its 59 stories are stilts.

Folk/gospel singers Kim & Reggie Harris will stop by the KALW studios this Sat. (Nov. 16th) at 3 pm on "Folk Music & Beyond" with Sonny Ochs,  sister of the late topical songwriter Phil Ochs.  They're in town to celebrate the 30th anniversary of "Phil Ochs Song Night."   

Today Crosscurrents is featuring The Fret Not Old-Time Gospel Band. They play Americana gospel, which they describe as “farmer formal” -- sacred songs from the Civil War era to the Depression. They frequently play at funerals, gospel missions, benefit concerts and prisons. Next Sunday (07.22) they’ll be at the Deuel Vocational State Prison in Tracy, starting at 5pm.
