(ASA) // The US House of Representatives was  presented with updated legislation yesterday calling for cannabis to be reclassified for medical use. US Representative Sam Farr, from California’s Central Coast, is a lead sponsor. The bill is substantially the same as one previously introduced by recently retired US Representative Barney Frank of Massachusetts.

(SFExaminer) // There is no war on drugs. Calling cannabis medicine sends a terrible message to the nation’s teens. And the Obama Administration strongly believes it is a false choice to consider legalization. These are some of the comments Gil Kerlikowske made this week in San Francisco. He leads the Office of National Drug Control Policy, the agency that last week admitted that Mexican gangs are not involved in growing cannabis in illegal plots in national forests.

Cannabis News Roundup: December 15, 2012

Dec 15, 2012

(Raw Story) // US Senator Patrick Leahy wants to know “What assurance can and will the administration give to state officials involved in licensing of marijuana retailers,” protecting them from federal intervention. This question is from a letter sent by Senator Leahy earlier this month to the Office of National Drug Control Policy. One assurance would be to amend the law to allow possession, where permitted.

(ASA) // The scientific merits of medical cannabis will be considered in federal court for the first time in nearly 20 years tomorrow. The US Court of Appeals in Washington, DC is set to hear oral arguments challenging the government’s classification of marijuana as a seriously dangerous drug, with no medicinal value. Their decision could come at any time, but proponents don’t expect an answer for several months.

There’s more bad news for teen boys smoking cannabis, but some good news for adults with certain cancers:

(CourthouseNews.com)  // Harborside Health Center’s landlord in San Jose is asking a federal judge to stop HHC from growing or storing marijuana on the property, saying that they thought it was legal to operate such a dispensary when they originally leased the space. The move is an attempt to prevent the U.S. Dept. of Justice from seizing the property for harboring illegal activities.

(Americans for Safe Access) // The Los Angeles ban on cannabis dispensaries is now on shaky legal ground after the State Supreme Court tossed out the case upon which the decision rests.

(Newsday) // The federal tax court has ruled against San Francisco’s now-closed Vapor Room. It means the business owes thousands of dollars in back taxes – and has wide implications for all dispensaries.

Marijuana is legal for medical use under California law, but sale and possession are still federal crimes. Raids on growers and dispensaries – and a general climate of uncertainty – are increasingly creating problems for the industry.

Last week, the company that processes most dispesary credit card transactions nationally announced that starting in July, it would no longer do so. This means businesses will now have to conduct most of their business in cash.
