Among other things, Today at 5pm Kevin will play some Love songs from Ireland in celebration of the passing of Marriage Equality by popular vote in Ireland today.

Live Irish music to this Saturday 3 pm PST with fiddler Athena Tergis on "Folk Music & Beyond." Athena will perform a few tunes and talk about her band The Green Fields of America and its latest project "A Celtic Appalachian Celebration," which will be having its west coast premiere Thursday March 19th at the Freight in Berkeley.

"Folk Music & Beyond" welcomes the return of folk singer John McCutcheon to the KALW airwaves this Saturday (January 10th) at 3 pm.  Local musicians Shay Black and Celia Ramsay will follow John at 4 pm and talk about their latest recording "Singer's Request." 

Solas Live This Saturday 3 pm!

Just Added!  Solas, one of this country's leading Irish-American bands, will be stopping by the KALW studios this Saturday for a live performance.  Led by talented multi-instrumentalist Seamus Egan, Solas has been called "exciting" and "brilliant."  Thistle & Shamrock calls Solas "Irish America's most influential band."  Solas will perform songs from its latest CD "Shamrock City," a tale of immigration, tragedy, corruption, and discrimination based on the true-life story of Michael Conway.

On Saturday March 29th  3:00 to 8:00 pm,  KALW's On-Air Folk Festival presents five hours of continuous live music by some of the Bay Area's finest musical talent.  Here's the line-up:

3:00 pm  Brass Farthing is an ensemble of stalwart lads that sings songs, raises good cheer, and otherwise makes merry in the company of friends both old and new. Their songs cover many periods and they perform historical, traditional, and contemporary compositions in traditional styles.

Paddy O'Brien will be our special guest this Saturday 3 pm on "Folk Music & Beyond."  Paddy will demonstrate his mastery of the accordion and talk about his remarkable musical memory for traditional tunes.  He has collected more than 4,000 compositions—jigs, reels, hornpipes, airs, and marches, including many rare and unusual tunes.   Paddy will open the Crossroads Irish-American Festival in San Francisco this weekend.

Join us this Saturday (10/26)  at 3 pm for Folk Music & Beyond's  25th birthday celebration!  The show started October 1988 and we've been going strong, thanks to your support and the support of our local music community.  We'll stroll down memory lane and listen to highlights from the many live concerts that have taken place in the KALW studios these past 25 years.

We'll paint the KALW airwaves green this Saturday 3 pm on Folk Music & Beyond--a celebration of  St. Patrick's a day early with lots of Irish music plus an encore broadcast with the late Liam Clancy, founding member of the renowned Clancy Brothers.  Liam Clancy and his brothers are credited with popularizing Irish traditional music and introducing it to American audiences in the 1960's.  Clancy recalled those wild times, dodging souvenir-hunting fans, and hanging out with poet Maya Angelou.

True Life Trio Live this Saturday 3 pm

We'll give you the low-down on two festivals opening in the Bay Area in March.  The Jewish Music Festival starts this weekend and some of the festival's musicians will perform this Saturday 3 pm in the KALW studios.  The True Life Trio perform original songs and folk tunes from the Balkans, the Americas, and beyond.  Klezmer fiddler Michael Alpert will also be on hand to play a few tunes.  The Crossroads Irish-American Festival opens on March 9th with a cornucopia of music and literary events.

A preview of three fabulous new releases:  The Chieftains are celebrating their 50th anniversary with the release of their new CD "Voice Of Ages."  Celtic artist Loreena McKennitt has a new live concert recording "Troubadours On The Rhine."  And highlighting our program is a recent interview with the Carolina Chocolate Drops, talking about their new CD "Leaving Eden."   Listen anytime this week via KALW's Local Music Player.

The Black Brothers

This song sounds Irish – and it is. But the Black Brothers, who perform it, live in the Bay Area. Brother Michael is a lecturer at San Francisco State University, and brother Shay has a weekly Irish show in Berkeley.

This Saturday the Black Brothers will be at the Larkspur Theater, in Larkspur, for St. Patrick’s Day!  Their performance begins at 8pm, following a documentary about Irish Step Dancing. 

Veteran Irish Folk Musician Mick Moloney and fiddler Athena Tergis will stop by the KALW studios this Saturday at 4 pm.  They'll play a few tunes and talk about Mick's research into the music of Irish-Americans and their contributions to vaudeville and Tin Pan Alley.

The great Irish fiddler Martin Hayes and guitarist Dennis Cahill return to Folk Music & Beyond for a live performance this Saturday February 25th at 3 pm.  Hayes ranks among the most innovative and distinguished fiddlers playing traditional music today.
