I Used To Be…

Giovanna Andrade, Junipero Serra Elementary

I used to be the ground

that everyone steps on

but now I am heaven

where everyone is welcome

I used to be a cloud

for the people to guess what shape I am

but now I am a cloud with rain

that people stare at and wonder about their life

I used to be a dead rose

with all my petals that have fallen off

but now I am a healthy garden

of beautiful roses

I used to be a broken weak branch

Lima
I am from Lima
where people have so much rage in their body
Now I'm in S.F.
where people are full of honesty
I am from Lima
where I couldn't stand the heat
Now I'm in S.F.
where I listen to new sick beats
I am from Lima
where I miss being so mean
Now I'm in S.F.
where I wait for August 19 I am from Lima where I eat Caldo De Gallina Now I'm in S.F. where I scare my sister pobrecita
I am from Lima
where it's hot and dry
Now I'm in S.F.

“Missing My Dad”

J. Sierra Elementary School

I remember the dad that I had—

I remember going over his house

And sleeping with him limb to limb

I remember playing soccer with him

Trying a lot, giving him everything I got.

I used to be a shark but now I’m a piranha

I used to be a small town but now I am a big country

I used to be clouds but now I am the sun

I used to be a fall leaf but now I am a blooming flower

“I Wish”

By Daniella Gavarrete

I wish I could help the Philippines

I see the children get food from the garbage

I wish I could be a cook
And cook for them

I wish I could be a doctor
And cure them

I wish I could be a construction worker
And build them new houses

Tearsa Joy Hammock / San Francisco Public Press

In 2011, the latest year that data is available, parents at San Francisco elementary schools collectively raised over five million dollars for their kids’ schools. More than half of that money was raised by only ten elementary schools in a district of 71.
