love

Summer is here – what philosophers, philosophies, or philosophical issues do you want to read up on? Heidegger's Being and Time may not be the obvious choice to take on vacation, but there are lots of readable, beach-friendly classics and non-classics to add philosophical depth to your summer reading.

Love and Ireland

May 23, 2015

Among other things, Today at 5pm Kevin will play some Love songs from Ireland in celebration of the passing of Marriage Equality by popular vote in Ireland today.

According to Corinthians 13, “Love is patient, love is kind and envies no one.” But is love always unconditional? Should it be? If unconditional love means that we love no matter what our beloved’s actions or traits are, doesn’t that suggest we should love everyone in this way? If not, how do we select just a few to love unconditionally? Perhaps the feeling we reserve for those we cherish most in the world is better described as selfless rather than unconditional love, in which case we are confronted with another challenge.

Philosophy Talk asks: What is Love?

Jul 4, 2014

It may seem doubtful that philosophers have much to tell us about love (beyond their love of wisdom). Surely it is the poets who have the market cornered when it comes to deep reflection on the nature of love. John and Ken question the notion that love cannot be captured by the light of reason by turning their attention to the philosophy of love with philosopher-poet Troy Jollimore from CSU Chico.

Two years ago, we interviewed two local Muslim women about their intimate stories of love. These stories were told in an anthology called Love, Inshallah: The Secret Love Lives of American Muslim Women. The book created such a stir, that the editors Ayesha Mattu and Nura Maznavi were bombarded with letters from Muslim men saying who wanted to share their love stories too.

It’s not often we hear a story of love and heartbreak – and the music that was specifically composed for it. One such story befell the 19th century composer Johannes Brahms and Clara Schumann. Meghan Laslocky is author of The Little Book of Heartbreak and she shares their story of love and the music that told it with KALW’s Hana Baba.

Take a moment and think of a typical love song. It probably declares something like "Love Me Tender" or "It Had to be You." It probably doesn't croon, "I clicked your photo." (Though there is at least one song about online dating. It's called "Web Site Story").

Valentine’s Day is a day that holds a lot of meaning for some people – and very little for others. Whether or not you celebrate Valentine’s Day, thinking about love is something we all do, often from the time we’re very young. Youth Radio’s Denise Tejada took some time out to ask the interns at her office what they think about love. Here are the voices of Sayre Quevedo, Kayla Ritchey, Eyama Harris, Rayana Godfrey, Madeleine Roberts, and Evan Y.T. Childress, all participants of Youth Radio in Oakland.
