Matt Jaffe

My Mixtape asks people from the Bay Area and beyond to contribute a song that is meaningful to them. Mill Valley's Matt Jaffe, guitarist and founder of the band Matt Jaffe & The Distractions, chose Hank Williams' "Hey Good Lookin," a song that grew on him as he grew to recognize Williams' songwriting skills.

Go ahead, ask Matt Jaffe anything. Just know that your question will likely lead the young singer/songwriter from Mill Valley on a musical detour before he gives you the answer you’re after.

For example, ask how he and his band, The Distractions, were chosen to support Blues Traveler, the Eighties jam band, on their national tour and he’s reminded of one of his influences.

“Well, there’s a great X song. It’s called “It’s Who You Know.”

LEGALIZATION & LEGISLATION

“You know, you can only paint a painting once. But a song, you can replay, re-envision, re-imagine virtually an infinite number of times,” says Matt Jaffe. And that’s one reason he wants to devote himself to music.

This Mill Valley singer-songwriter has opened for the legendary Mavis Staples and will do the same March 7th for Megan Slankard. One thing he couldn’t do, if he wasn’t on stage, is legally attend many of his own shows; Matt Jaffe is only 19.
