Matt Jaffe & The Distractions

My Mixtape asks people from the Bay Area and beyond to contribute a song that is meaningful to them. Mill Valley's Matt Jaffe, guitarist and founder of the band Matt Jaffe & The Distractions, chose Hank Williams' "Hey Good Lookin," a song that grew on him as he grew to recognize Williams' songwriting skills.

“You know, you can only paint a painting once. But a song, you can replay, re-envision, re-imagine virtually an infinite number of times,” says Matt Jaffe. And that’s one reason he wants to devote himself to music.

This Mill Valley singer-songwriter has opened for the legendary Mavis Staples and will do the same March 7th for Megan Slankard. One thing he couldn’t do, if he wasn’t on stage, is legally attend many of his own shows; Matt Jaffe is only 19.

Matt Jaffe may be tiring of comments about how young he is. “Your birthday is no measure of your age,” he sings in “Young Enough.” But there’s no way around it: hearing a performer this good at 19 years old is notable.

Matt Jaffe & The Distractions have a strong live performance. They are not kidding around, yet it is clear that they are also having a lot of fun.
