Today on Your Call: Friday Media Roundtable

Mar 23, 2012

On today's Your Call, it’s our Friday media roundtable. This week, we’ll have a conversation about media coverage of 'This American Life' retracting Mike Daisey's  monologue about Apple-Foxconn. We’ll also mark the 9th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq. We’ll be joined by Mother Jones’ Andy Kroll, Atlantic’s Rebecca Greenfield, and Aljazeera’s Jane Arraf joins us from Baghdad. Join us live at 10 or send and email to feedback@yourcallradio.org. Where did you see the best reporting this week? It’s Your Call, with Rose Aguilar and you

Oh, what a mess.

By now you’ve heard about the dust up over the This American Life episode that aired this weekend— “Retraction”— in which the show did the unprecedented. It took back a story it had aired on the grounds that some of the material turned out not to be factual. You may have also seen the story arc for the past few days of Mike Daisey, the monologist whose work is at the center of it all.

This American Life is retracting its episode “Mister Daisey and the Apple Factory,” based on Mike Daisey’s monologue about Foxconn factories that manufacture iPhones and iPads, which contains what TAL acknowledges were numerous fabrications.  These fabrications were uncovered by Marketplace’s China Correspondent.

On today’s Your Call, we’ll have a conversation about a nationwide campaign calling on Apple to improve working conditions in its manufacturing plants in China, where workers say they make less than $1 an hour and work up to 16 hour days. Holiday sales boosted Apple profits to $1 billion a week. How can citizens push companies like Apple to make products without exploiting workers?  Join us at 10 or email feedback@yourcallradio.org. What do you expect from companies whose products you buy? It’s Your Call, with Rose Aguilar and you.
