Sights & Sounds is your weekly guide to the Bay Area arts scene through the eyes and ears of local artists. This week our guest is Edy Boone. She’s a muralist, community activist, and teacher. Boone came in to the KALW studios to tell Jen Chien about addressing social issues through her art  and to give her picks for cool happenings around the Bay this weekend.

Today’s local music is by blues and jazz vocalist Kim Nalley. A review of one of her shows in Moscow called her “The Pearl of San Francisco.”

Kim Nalley will be the SFJazz Center tomorrow (07.17). She plans a tribute concert honoring Billie Holiday. That show starts at 7:30pm.

The music you're hearing was written by Bay Area composer Lou Harrison, and is being played by David Tenenbaum.  It’s a commission from Other Minds, the contemporary music organization dedicated to encouraging “creative exploration in new music.”

It's part of the first concert in the twentieth "Other Minds Festival," taking place Friday (03.06) at the SFJazz Center on Franklin Street. There's a panel discussion at 7pm, with the concert at 8pm.

Jazz Perspective: Jason Moran

Nov 18, 2013

Pianist Jason Moran became famous in the 1990s as a young rebel playing his own unique styles. He became known as one of the finest interpreters of Thelonius Monk's music, and he composes many original tunes.

In addition to a busy touring schedule, Moran teaches at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. “I learn a lot from what the students are doing. It keeps me engaged from what's happening in contemporary music, from the 19-year-old perspective. It's helpful.”

What you’re hearing now is the best the Bay Area has to offer in young jazz musicians. This is the award-winning SFJazz High School All-Star Orchestra. They’re helping to inaugurate the new SFJazz Center next Saturday May 18. It’s an afternoon show, starting at 2pm.

Benny Velarde

Mar 27, 2012

The music you’re hearing is by Benny Velarde. Velarde has played with just about every jazz great in the Bay Area, from Tito Puente and Cal Tjader to Vince Guaraldi and Lalo Shifrin. Velarde receives the Beacon Award from SFJazz this Saturday, March 31, marking sixty years of performing. The show takes place at San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center Forum, starting at 8 pm.

Tune in this Thursday to Africa Mix, when Emmanuel Nado's guest will be Ethiopian-born, San Francisco-based singer songwriter Meklit Hadero.

Meklit erupted to national notice with the 2010 release of her CD "On a Day Like This" bringing her music to a whole new audience.  She performs next Friday, March 23rd at the Herbst Theater for SFJazz.  Hear her on KALW this Thursday at 9pm.
