Ice T’s Doc ‘The Art of Rap’ Is a Must See

This weekend, Something from Nothing: The Art of Rap opens in theaters, and it is absolutely deserving of an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary. It’s compelling, witty and much needed in terms of refocusing us on what hip hop, and rap in particular, is really about. There have been a number of documentaries put out over the years that have focused on emceeing, but this one really hits home for a few reasons.

Sweden, it’s as though we never knew you

It seemed to be going so well, that exercise in democratic Tweeting that Sweden so optimistically dived into this month.

In case you missed it, the idea was to allow a different Swede citizen to helm the country’s official Twitter account each week, in a government effort to showcase the diversity of Sweden’s citizenry.

You have to imagine that any bureaucrat worth their salt who would approve of such a risky experiment would have a contingency plan for when that experiment inevitably went off the rails.

Foster youth debates emancipation

About 4,000 foster youth emancipate each year in California. Many of them have no place to go. A new law that went into effect this year aims to help them transition to adulthood. AB12 allows foster youth to stay in state care until they are 20 years old. They get financial support, and help finding housing and scholarships for college. They also have to check in with a social worker, and have regular court dates. Advocates hope the law will reduce the chances that these young people will end up homeless.

Opinion: Meritocracy is a Bad Word

According to Merriam-Webster, the word meritocracy has two definitions: a system in which the talented are chosen and promoted on the basis of their achievement; and, leadership selected on the basis of intellectual criteria. However, given the amount of times I’ve heard this word used (improperly) to describe the tech industry over the past couple of years, I think Merriam-Webster must have gotten it wrong. I think they actually meant to define it as “nonsense; especially foolish insolent talk;” also known as b&llsh*#.
